Newnan, Georgia

Momma is and has always been a fan of country singer Alan Jackson. When she found out that the next town over from Peachtree City was Newnan where Alan Jackson is from there was no telling her we couldn’t go. So, on our final morning in Atlanta, we headed out to Newnan Georgia to see where this guy comes from………

Newnan was a pleasant surprise. It was the typical small southern town with a courthouse square surrounded by restaurants and shops.

Newnan was established in 1828. During the Civil War it was considered a hospital city by both the Union and Confederate forces, so it was relatively untouched by the war. It retains a lot of its antebellum architecture. 42,000 live in the city today.

In March of 2021 Newnan was hit by a EF4 tornado, the strongest on record in Georgia since 1950.

The ladies went into a shop and bought some things, and the clerk gave us some fascinating insights into the town. She told us where to find the Alan Jackson mural pictured above. She also told us about the Redneck Gourmet where we went to enjoy a light lunch.

We also found out the town has a slight connection to another living legend, Jeff Foxworthy. Foxworthy is not from Newnan, but nearby Hapeville is where he went to high school. The man who illustrates Foxworthy’s books is the same one who designed the logo for the Redneck Gourmet…

After eating we walked around the square some.
